The first thing to ask is, are you moving yourself or are you hiring someone to move for you? If it is the latter, are they moving by land transport, aerial transport, or a cargo ship. Ok, my guess is that it’s one of the first two. If you are having your stuff flown to a new location, make sure they are a reputable company with references. Don’t trust customer quotes from their website. Find a neutral review site and see what real people say about the job they did. If something was broken, it will be written about. If you are having your boxes moved via land transport, then the same rules apply, but you will have a much bigger pool of companies to choose from. You still need to check for good and bad reviews when you are researching your
auto shipping quotes. Don’t go with the first affordable quote you find. Research, research, research. If you are moving yourself, then the headache of wondering whether your boxes will be treated gently goes away. Now you can focus on the most important part about moving with electronics: packing them. You may want to find an
auto transport for your vehicle.
One of the most expensive pieces of electronics you might be moving with would be your computer. Back up all software to an external hard drive, discs, or both. Some people get into the habit of packing all the chords and cables in one box separate from the electronics they belong to. This is a big mistake. Try to keep all chords and cables packed with the hardware they plug into. Also try to put a piece of tape on the cable labeling where it goes on the equipment. Another good electronic device moving trick is to pack them in the boxes they came in. This is how the manufacturer packed them so you can usually trust that. You may have to add additional pieces of packing material but a good amount of newspaper will usually do the trick. Finally, be mindful of how you pack your car or moving van. Don’t put valuable electronics on the bottom of the pile simply because it’s the biggest box. You also don’t want to cram too many boxes into too small a space. That may work for your clothes and sheets, but electronics need a little space to breathe. Keep in mind where they sit.
With these very simple and easy to follow guidelines, you can be sure that your electronics will arrive at their new home safely. Try to unpack them as soon as you can. Start charging the ones that need charging right away and boot up your computer so it can start doing what it does and you can be sure that you’ve hooked everything up right so it will. Electronics are quirky. They don’t seem to like the rapid change of environments or moving. But then again, neither do most of us!
